Zachary Christie is a six year old boy who was suspended and facing 45 days in district's reforms school for bringing a cub scout utensils which can be used as spoon, fork and knife.
Zachary Christie, who is a first grader in Christina School District, recently joined the Cub Scouts. He was so excited to use his utensils that he brought it to school to use at lunch. His teacher saw him holding the utensils and handed it to the principal. And because his school is one of the schools which implemented the zero-tolerance policy on weapon, the school officials concluded that a six year old boy Zachary Christie violated rule. According to them, They had to suspend him because, “regardless of possessor’s intent,” knives are banned.
The School District committee recommended that he be alternatively placed at The Douglass School, a reform school for juvenile delinquents. This is the same school where they place children who have severe behavioral problems and who are guilty of such offenses as assault and battery, rape, drug offenses, concealing a deadly weapon, and more. Since there is absolutely zero chance that we will allow that to happen, the only hope for Zachary being able to rejoin his friends at Downes Elementary is if Christina School District Superintendent Marcia Lyles or the Christina School Board intervenes to overturn the committee's decision.
Is the verdict of the school officials fair to Zachary Christie? Would a six-year boy can really intentional harm to others?
